The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a UK government programme that requires large energy suppliers to fund home insulation for qualifying households. If you are eligible, the full cost of cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, or solid wall insulation is covered - you pay nothing. The scheme runs alongside the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and together they fund up to £14,000 of work per property.
Who qualifies for free wall insulation?
Eligibility depends on your property, heating system, EPC rating, and whether you receive certain benefits. You are likely to qualify if you own or privately rent your home, your property has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G, your home is heated by mains gas, oil, LPG, or electric storage heaters, and you receive a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Income Support. Even if you are not on benefits, you may still qualify under GBIS if your home has poor insulation and falls within certain council tax bands.
